"Which boiler should I get?" is a genuinely common question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your household's hot water demand and what's already in place, not simply which type is most popular. The three main types — combi, system, and regular (conventional) — each suit different situations, and getting the match wrong is one of the more common regrets homeowners raise after a replacement.
Combi boilers
A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains on demand, with no separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank needed. This makes it space-efficient and gives instant hot water at the tap, which is why it's a common choice for flats and smaller houses.
- Best suited to: a household with one bathroom, or two bathrooms rarely used at the same time, and limited space for a cylinder or loft tank.
- The trade-off: hot water output is limited by the boiler's instantaneous heating capacity — running two hot taps or a shower and a bath at once can mean reduced flow or temperature.
- Worked example: a two-bedroom flat with a single bathroom is a textbook combi case — instant hot water, no tank taking up airing-cupboard space, and genuinely low simultaneous demand.
System boilers
A system boiler still uses a hot water cylinder to store heated water (giving stronger simultaneous multi-outlet performance than a combi) but most of the major components are built into the boiler itself, so it doesn't need a separate cold water tank in the loft. It's commonly paired with an unvented cylinder, which delivers mains-pressure hot water throughout the house without needing a header tank at all.
- Best suited to: homes with two or more bathrooms used around the same time, where a combi's on-demand limit would genuinely bite.
- The trade-off: you lose some airing-cupboard space to the cylinder, and hot water is finite between reheats, even though the reheat itself is generally efficient.

Regular (conventional) boilers

- What's your existing setup, and would switching type mean removing/adding a cylinder and tank?
- What's your household's realistic peak hot water demand, not just an assumption based on house size?
- Is airing-cupboard space genuinely available for a cylinder, or is a combi's lack of one the deciding factor on its own?
What happens if you get it wrong
The most common complaint from an undersized combi in a busy household is exactly what you'd expect: a shower running cold the moment someone else turns on a hot tap. The most common regret with an oversized system or regular setup is space lost to a cylinder and tank that a smaller household never actually needed. Both are avoidable by being honest about real usage patterns before choosing, rather than defaulting to whatever the old boiler happened to be.
