Subfloor Preparation: What's Needed Before New Flooring Goes Down

The subfloor — the structural surface underneath your finished flooring, whether that's concrete or timber — matters more to how long new flooring lasts than almost any other single factor. It needs to be clean, flat, dry, and structurally sound before anything is laid on top of it, and skipping this step is one of the most common causes of flooring problems later on.

Checking the subfloor is flat

Most flooring manufacturers specify a maximum tolerance for how uneven a subfloor can be (commonly checked with a straight edge across a set distance) before it needs levelling. An uneven subfloor causes rigid flooring like laminate, LVT, and engineered wood to flex unevenly underfoot, which accelerates wear at the joints and can cause clicking, lifting, or premature failure. Checking for moisture

A proper moisture test (using a moisture meter or a taped-down plastic sheet test over a day or two) before fitting flooring is genuinely worth doing rather than assuming the slab is dry enough.

Cleaning and priming

Dust, debris, old adhesive residue, and paint splashes left on the subfloor can all prevent adhesives from bonding properly, or create small lumps that telegraph through thinner flooring types like sheet vinyl. A thorough sweep, vacuum, and where needed, priming with a compatible primer, gives whatever goes down next the best chance of a lasting bond.

Damp-proof membranes

Where moisture readings are borderline, or the flooring type demands it, a damp-proof membrane (a plastic or liquid-applied barrier) laid across the subfloor before flooring goes down can prevent moisture from reaching the new floor even if the slab itself isn't perfectly dry. This is a standard, sensible step for ground-floor concrete subfloors with laminate, engineered wood, or certain LVT products.

Timber subfloors specifically

For suspended timber floors, check for any loose, damaged, or bouncy boards and fix these before laying new flooring on top — problems in the subfloor don't disappear under new flooring, they just become harder to access and fix later. Common mistakes

The most common mistake is rushing subfloor preparation to get to the more visually satisfying part of laying the new floor. The second is assuming a subfloor that "looks fine" is actually flat and dry enough without checking — both are quick to check properly and expensive to get wrong once flooring is down on top.

Checking your subfloor yourself

A long spirit level or a straight length of timber laid across the floor can give you a rough sense of any obvious dips or high points before calling in a professional. A basic moisture meter, available relatively cheaply from DIY retailers, can give an indicative reading on a concrete or timber subfloor, though a professional damp survey is more reliable if the result is borderline or you're planning an expensive flooring type. For timber subfloors, walking the room slowly and noting any soft, bouncy, or creaking spots is a useful first check before boards are covered up.

How long does subfloor preparation add to the project?

Straightforward cleaning and priming can be done in a day. Levelling compound typically needs a day or so to cure sufficiently before flooring can go on top, and addressing a genuine damp issue — installing a membrane, or in more serious cases treating the underlying cause — can add anywhere from a day to considerably longer depending on what's found. Building this time into your overall project schedule upfront avoids the frustration of an "almost finished" room stalling for a week while subfloor problems are sorted out.

What if you're removing old flooring first?

Removing old adhesive, old underlay staples, or old tile adhesive residue is often the most time-consuming part of subfloor preparation, and rushing this step to save time is a common mistake. Old flooring adhesive in particular can leave a surface that looks clean but still has enough residue to prevent good adhesion for the new flooring, so a thorough scrape and clean, sometimes followed by light sanding or grinding, is worth the extra time it takes.
