The short answer
Current UK guidance suggests a target depth of around 270mm of mineral wool loft insulation (or the equivalent thickness in other materials, which varies by product) for a typical pitched roof. Many UK homes — particularly those insulated decades ago and never topped up — have considerably less than this, sometimes only 50-100mm, meaning a genuinely worthwhile and inexpensive improvement is just sitting there unaddressed.
How to check what you've currently got
Go into the loft (with a torch and appropriate care around joists and any electrics) and measure the depth of the existing insulation with a tape measure at a few different points, since it's common for coverage to be uneven — thinner near the eaves, missing entirely in places, or compressed where it's been walked on or has boxes stored on top of it. If you have less than around 270mm of mineral wool (or the equivalent depth for whatever material is currently installed), topping up is very likely worthwhile.
How much to add
If you have an existing layer, say, 100mm deep, adding a further 170mm on top (running the new roll perpendicular to any existing rolls, to reduce gaps and cold bridging at the joints) gets you to the current recommended target. If there's no existing insulation at all, or it's in poor condition, it's often simplest to remove what's there and start with a full fresh installation to the target depth, rather than topping up something patchy or degraded.
Materials
- Mineral wool (glass wool or rock wool) roll: the most common, cost-effective option, sold in rolls sized for standard joist spacing, straightforward to install between and over joists.
- Loose-fill insulation: blown in by a professional installer, useful for irregular loft shapes or hard-to-reach areas, though harder to DIY.
- Rigid insulation boards: more commonly used where loft space is being converted into usable space (see our guides on insulation costs generally) rather than for a simple loft-floor top-up.
DIY or professional installation?
Topping up an easily accessible loft with roll insulation between and over joists is a genuinely realistic DIY job for a reasonably competent homeowner — the material is inexpensive, the technique is straightforward (unroll, cut to length, lay perpendicular to any existing layer), and the main practical challenges are safe movement around the loft (using proper loft boards or crawling boards to avoid stepping through the ceiling between joists) and wearing appropriate protection (gloves, mask, eye protection — mineral wool fibres can irritate skin, eyes and lungs). A difficult-to-access loft, loose-fill installation, or a loft with existing damp or ventilation issues is better handled by a professional installer.
Don't block the ventilation
It's important not to insulate right up against the eaves in a way that blocks the roof's ventilation gap (typically maintained using eaves ventilation trays or by simply leaving a clear gap at the eaves) — blocking this airflow can lead to condensation building up in the roof structure over time, a genuinely more costly problem than the insulation was meant to solve. If you're unsure, this is worth checking with a professional installer or product manufacturer's guidance before insulating right to the eaves edge.
What about pipes and the water tank?
Once you insulate the loft floor, the loft space itself becomes colder (since heat from the house below is no longer warming it as much), which means any water tank or exposed pipework up there becomes more vulnerable to freezing in cold weather. Insulate the tank and any exposed pipes separately (inexpensive tank jackets and pipe lagging are widely available) at the same time as topping up the floor insulation — this is a genuinely common oversight that leads to frozen pipes in a newly well-insulated loft.
Common mistakes
- Not measuring before assuming it needs topping up (or doesn't). Check the actual depth in a few places rather than guessing.
- Compressing the insulation by storing boxes directly on top of it. Compressed insulation performs worse — if you need loft storage, raise a boarded platform above the insulation level rather than compressing it.
- Blocking eaves ventilation. Leads to condensation risk — leave the ventilation gap or use proper eaves ventilation trays.
- Forgetting the water tank and pipes. A newly insulated loft floor makes the loft space colder, increasing freeze risk for anything up there.
Cost and payback
Topping up an average loft with easy access typically costs roughly £300-£600 for materials and, if not doing it yourself, installation — and because materials are inexpensive and installation is quick, this is usually one of the fastest-payback energy improvements available, often recovering its cost within just a few years through reduced heating bills.
