The short answer
Composite doors generally outperform uPVC front doors on security, insulation and kerb appeal, but cost roughly 1.5–2x as much. For a front door — the one door most homeowners want to look genuinely good and feel solid — composite is usually worth the extra outlay. For a rarely-seen side or utility door, uPVC is often perfectly adequate.
What each door is actually made of
A uPVC door is a hollow or foam-filled uPVC profile, similar construction to a uPVC window, usually with a moulded decorative panel. A composite door is built around a solid timber or insulated foam core, faced with GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) skins, then fitted into a uPVC or timber frame. The composite construction is inherently more rigid and substantial — it's the main reason composite doors feel noticeably heavier and more solid when you close them.
Security
Both door types can be specified with a multi-point locking system and a British Standard-rated cylinder (look for a door and lock rated to PAS 24 or with a Sold Secure Diamond-rated cylinder — genuine security ratings, not just marketing language), so security isn't automatically better on composite. What composite does offer is a more rigid door slab that's harder to force at the panel itself, since a foam-and-timber composite core resists impact far better than a hollow or foam-filled uPVC panel. If security is the main concern, ask any supplier for the specific PAS 24 and lock cylinder ratings rather than assuming material alone settles it.
Insulation and weather performance
Composite doors typically achieve better U-values than standard uPVC doors because of the solid insulated core, and the GRP skin doesn't expand and contract with temperature the way uPVC can — which matters for how well the door continues to seal against the frame over years of UK weather. uPVC doors have improved significantly and a good modern one performs well, but composite generally has the edge here too.
Appearance and finish
This is where composite doors pull furthest ahead for most homeowners. GRP skins can be moulded and painted to convincingly replicate a timber-grain finish, and colour options extend well beyond the standard white/anthracite/black range typical of uPVC — heritage colours like Chartwell Green, Duck Egg Blue or deep reds are common on composite ranges aimed at period and semi-period homes. uPVC doors, by contrast, tend to look distinctly like uPVC close up, even in wood-effect finishes.
Cost
Expect a standard uPVC front door supplied and fitted to run roughly £400–£800, while a composite front door typically costs £900–£1,800+ depending on the range, glazing design and any bespoke sizing. Both prices vary a lot by supplier, region and door furniture (handles, letterbox, knocker) specified.
Maintenance
Both are low-maintenance compared with timber — no repainting required for either as standard. uPVC can be wiped clean; composite is similarly low-effort, with the GRP skin resisting fading and scratching well. Neither needs the periodic recoating that a timber door does.
Common mistakes
- Assuming "composite" always means better security. Check the actual PAS 24 and cylinder ratings on the specific product, not just the material.
- Not checking the frame material separately from the door slab. A composite door slab can be fitted into a uPVC or timber frame — make sure you know which you're getting and that it suits your property.
- Underestimating lead times. Composite doors are often made to order in a specific colour/glazing combination and can take 4–8 weeks, versus a few days to a couple of weeks for a stock uPVC door — plan ahead if you need it by a specific date.
Which should you choose?
For a front door that needs to look genuinely good and perform well for 20+ years, composite is generally the better investment despite the higher upfront cost.
