Most DIY injuries are avoidable with basic protective equipment that costs a fraction of the job itself. Here's what's actually worth having, matched to what it protects against — not a generic list, but the gear that corresponds to real risks in typical UK renovation and repair work, and where it's genuinely worth spending a bit more.

Eye protection

Safety glasses are non-negotiable for cutting, drilling, sanding, or anything that throws debris — including jobs that feel low-risk, like drilling a single hole in a wall, where a chip of masonry can travel further and faster than expected. A basic pair costs a few pounds; a serious eye injury does not have a comparable price tag, in cost or in consequence. Choose glasses rated to EN 166, the relevant British/European standard, rather than novelty sunglasses-style eyewear that offers no real impact protection.

Hearing protection

Power tools — drills, saws, sanders — routinely produce noise levels that cause long-term hearing damage with repeated exposure, and damage from noise is cumulative and permanent; it doesn't recover the way some other injuries do. Ear defenders or good-quality foam ear plugs are cheap and make longer jobs considerably less fatiguing as well as safer, since sustained tool noise is tiring even when it's not causing obvious harm in the moment.

Respiratory protection — this is where cheap gear genuinely isn't good enough

Not all dust masks are equal, and the difference matters more than it might seem. A basic paper "nuisance dust" mask stops large particles but does very little against fine dust from sanding, cutting masonry, or working with plasterboard and MDF — the particles small enough to actually damage your lungs pass straight through a mask that isn't properly rated. For anything beyond light, occasional dust, look for a mask rated FFP2 or, for masonry dust, cutting concrete/brick, or working with older materials that may contain silica, FFP3. These are genuinely different products, not a "better version" of the same thing — check the rating printed on the mask itself rather than assuming any dust mask will do.

If a job involves suspected asbestos — common in older UK properties in materials like textured ceiling coatings, older floor tiles, and pipe lagging installed before the 1990s — stop and get it professionally assessed. This is not a DIY job under any circumstances; asbestos disturbance is a genuine, serious health risk, separately regulated, and not something a dust mask of any rating makes safe to handle yourself.

Hand protection

General-purpose work gloves protect against splinters, sharp edges, and abrasions for most tasks. For handling glass, sharp metal, or when using certain chemicals, cut-resistant or chemical-resistant gloves are worth the extra cost — check the product's rating matches the actual hazard rather than assuming "gloves are gloves," since a glove rated for general handling offers little protection against a genuinely sharp edge or a corrosive substance.

Knee protection

Often overlooked, but genuinely worth it for flooring work, tiling, or anything spent kneeling for extended periods — knee pads prevent both immediate discomfort and the kind of repeated-strain joint damage that builds up over a full weekend's work and can affect mobility well beyond the job itself.

Working at height

If a job involves a ladder or steps, that's a safety consideration in its own right, separate from PPE — always check it's rated for the job and the height involved, set it up on firm, level ground, have someone footing it where practical, and never overreach to the side rather than repositioning the ladder. Most ladder accidents happen through overreaching or an unstable base, not equipment failure.

Clothing and general precautions

Beyond dedicated PPE, sensible clothing choices reduce risk too: avoid loose sleeves or dangling jewellery around any rotating tool, tie back long hair, and wear sturdy footwear rather than open shoes when moving materials or working with anything that could be dropped. None of this is specialist equipment, but it's part of the same basic mindset — matching what you're wearing to the actual risk of the job in front of you.

What a sensible safety kit costs

A full set — safety glasses, ear defenders, FFP2/FFP3 masks, gloves, knee pads — typically costs £30-£60 for reasonable-quality equipment, considerably less than a single trip to A&E, and it's kit that lasts for years of occasional DIY use if stored reasonably (a dry drawer or box, not the bottom of a damp shed).

Matching gear to the specific job, not a generic checklist

Not every job needs every item — the point is matching protection to the actual risk in front of you rather than treating safety gear as one uniform kit for everything. A quick shelf-fixing job might just need eye protection for the drilling. A weekend spent sanding a floor needs proper respiratory protection, ear defenders for the duration, and knee protection if you're working close to the ground. Before starting, it's worth a moment thinking through what the job will actually expose you to — dust, noise, height, sharp materials — rather than reaching for the same gloves and glasses regardless of task.

First aid basics worth having on hand

Beyond preventative gear, a basic first aid kit kept somewhere accessible — not buried in a cupboard you'd need to search for in an emergency — is worth having before starting any job involving tools or materials that could cause a cut or minor injury. Plasters, an antiseptic wipe or spray, and a way to stop minor bleeding cover the vast majority of small DIY injuries; anything beyond that warrants medical attention rather than home treatment.
